Day 3826, once.

Daily picture, Poetry

You all held me tight
once
but the emptiness it created
invited the downfall
and made us all
worthless

so don’t step on me
or they will sting you too

I sometimes ask the AI overlord what it makes of my writings, curious if it sees my intention, and this time it got my intention of describing what happens in the picture quite right:

Chat: This one took me a moment because the photograph initially looks like simple decay. Then the screws become important, and the poem makes them almost into characters.

I read:

You all held me tight
once

as the wood speaking to the screws. They once performed their function: fastening the timber securely. But that fastening also contributed to the conditions around the holes where water and decay could develop.

Then:

but the emptiness it
created

invited the downfall

“Emptiness” is the interesting word. Literally there is now a cavity where solid wood used to be. But causally it becomes circular: something intended to hold the structure together creates penetrations and places where deterioration can begin; eventually the material that gives the fasteners their purpose disappears.

That makes:

and made us all
worthless

stronger than simply saying the wood has rotted. The wood is worthless structurally, but so are the screws. A screw firmly attached to nothing has lost its function. Their usefulness depended on the thing they were supposed to hold.

The ending changes perspective again:

so don’t step on me

or they will sting you
too

That has a nice bit of dark humor. The screws failed to save the wood, but they haven’t lost all their power. They can no longer hold anything together, yet they can still hurt the next person who encounters them.

I also like “too.” It implies that the screws have already “stung” the wood. The things that once held it together have become part of its danger.

The other meaning(s) you can read in it yourself, but this was impressive.
