They were all stuck there
trapped in their own history

It is not really worth it to pay attention to the USA, they are so much like all those struggling American countries, and to be honest, the others are more interesting, but also less loud. I saw today that the most charismatic oligarch sent in the army against some of the citizens who were protesting against the masked police; somehow, these people know that it is shameful what they do, otherwise they wouldn’t hide. Did you know that the secret police in Nazi Germany didn’t hide their faces, unashamed as they were. But the USA will probably go that way too; some of the leaders already have no shame. When I grew up in the eighties, we all knew a few German sentences, one of them was: “ich habe es nicht gewusst” meaning “I didn’t know”. That was what most former supporters of Hitler told the new rulers when they learned about the gas chambers. Another sentence was: “Ich habe nur Befehle befolgt”, and that means “I just followed orders”, something the masked police will probably say one day. Most people who support the current junta will be ok with what is going on as long as it doesn’t come too close. Only when they smell the stench of an El Salvadoran prison will they realize what they did to innocent prisoners. And the ICE agents who “just” follow orders they are probably selected by people with hate in their hearts, and are not much better. They have a choice and can quit, but they don’t and are, as such, not suitable to serve in a civilized society. 

I think that this spiritually poor American country ones did a great thing by liberating Europe from the Nazi’s. I also believe that it is no coincidence that the President who did this, Franklin D. Roosevelt, also introduced the USA to some sort of welfare system, where people willingly wanted to help each other for the greater good.  At least half of that country never forgave him and has been working hard to destroy what once was a promising future. But like most American countries, the USA has also been ruled by oligarchs for years, with every now and then an enlightened ruler and a pinch of dictatorship. I see no reason why this land, filled with immigrants who pushed out the original inhabitants, is any different from all the other American countries. 

In a thousand years this all will just be a chapter in a history book, probably with a not so flattering tittle.
